Bob's Legislative Blog
Friday, July 07 2017

Thanks to all you Home Inspectors who responded to the AAREI “Call to Action” in March to defeat both legislative bills that would have allowed anyone to claim they were professionals in their fields, including home inspectors, to do business and collect fees without having a State of Arkansas License.  We were able to bottle up both bills in committee due to the intense lobbying by your efforts and our coalition partners through the State Chamber of Commerce.  This demonstrates strength of numbers when dealing with the Arkansas Legislature.  We also had Members who were on call to testify to the damage to the public that passage of either bill would have fostered.

Now we have a Legislative Task Force that is studying “Tax Reform” which may have the final effect of raising taxes.  I am concerned that an outside consulting firm hired by the Legislature will suggest a sales tax on services that most likely would include a sales tax on your services.  I don’t think any of you want to see this happen.  We will keep you informed about the progress of the task force.

The Arkansas Home Inspector Registration Board is studying the possibility of creating a method of closing of the “swing door” that is causing new home inspectors to leave the business after a year or two of  performing home inspections.  They are meeting on Friday, July 14, 2017, at 9:30 a.m. at the offices of the Arkansas Attorney General, located at 323 Center Street, Suite 200, Little Rock.  Any one who has any ideas for this issue is encouraged to attend and participate.  You can park free in the parking deck located next to the AG’s Office.  Just have your parking stub validated by the receptionist when you check in.
